Mesmerizing. I love that these sculptures embody the qualities of mathematics yet remain so organic. I especially enjoy the wooden pieces.
Don't miss the MAKE video on Margolin (embedded after the jump).

I get that element of surprise - the meticulous theorizing and planning, the tedious execution - all without knowing whether or not you'll like the results. I go through that with each and every digital, abstract work I produce. I was happy to hear Mr. Margolin voice that as well.
The precision in his making blows my mind, and makes the organic aspects of the work all the more beautiful. These are the types of "machines" that I dream about endlessly. I can't stop looking at them. They activate my imagination like automata, or some hand operated curio in a dark smoke filled shop. Like something out of the Invention of Hugo Cabret.
I hadn't thought of the connection to automatons. Thanks, John. That pulls it right back into Freud.
There seems to be a sweet spot between the marvelous and the abject.
Who would happily allow a maggot to ascend their sleeve? yet, who wouldn't marvel at the beauty of its locomotion?
I think that the we'll be seeing more and more of this duality in the near future.
I would love to have the patience to make something so beautiful.
mesmerizing. i also enjoy the transparent nature of the documentary short… thanks!
